What is the Global Registration Cycle?
The Global Registration Cycle is the schedule the Sports and Recreation Unit uses to determine registration dates every year. These dates are not set in stone and there is always some change from one year to the next. The cycle is decided upon with the direction of all the Minor Sports Boards in Kahnawá:ke. Each Minor Sport has their own different registration period in order to avoid having too many going on at once.

Why is registration held so early in the year?
The Minor Sports have to accommodate the schedules of the leagues they play out of, and these leagues need registration numbers in as early as possible to set up game schedules and begin booking floor/ice time and/or officials.

Why must I pay for my child to play sports in Kahnawá:ke? Doesn’t Council give the Minor Sports money?
Every year the Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke distributes funds among the Minor Sports who have applied for it, but it is not enough. The Kahnawá:ke Minor Sports are all nonprofit organizations, every year the cost to operate these programs rises.

Every Minor Sport is different but typically the money collected at registration goes towards player medical insurance fees, training clinics, officiating fees (referees and umpires, etc.,) ice or floor rental, line painting and grass cutting prices, uniforms, equipment, league fees and fines, tournaments fees, trophies and banquet fees.

What if my child doesn’t like the sport he’s in?
If you are looking for a reimbursement there is a form available at the Sports and Recreation reception that will be sent to the Treasurer of the Minor Sport in question and they will handle the reimbursement of any funds owed. There are different reimbursement formulae for each Minor Sport depending on how long a child has been in the sport.

What happens to the money I pay for my child’s registration?
Registration payments are made at SRU then the payments are deposited at the MCK with the cashier. Then a cheque is requisitioned by the SRU on behalf of the Minor Sport so your registration money is sent directly to the Minor Sport.

Can I pay with a post-dated cheque? What happens if my cheque is NSF?
Not unless prior arrangements were made with somebody in the SRU office or the Treasurer on the Minor Sports board of the sport in question. The SRU does not charge any additional fines for NSF cheques. Any fees charged to your account are at your bank’s discretion. Anybody who bounces a cheque will no longer have their cheques accepted at the SRU. If you have been allowed to make a post-dated cheque and know it will not be cashable please call the SRU as soon as possible and we will try to hold it for you if we can.

Why must I bring my child’s Medicare card or Birth Certificate or picture for some sports?
It all depends on the sport in question, hockey only requires the Medicare number for emergencies, Baseball requires a photocopy of the card, Lacrosse require a copy of the birth certificate as well as the card for new players, Soccer requires the Medicare number as well as a photo of the child. In addition to the safety issue the various leagues are insured by these official documents and pictures that the child being registered or brought to each game is not a ‘ringer’ being brought in to play at a lower level in order to win.

Why is my child’s English name used? Why is my child’s last name different on the form?
We have to use the name you registered your child in the province with because the Leagues use Medicare cards as identification. If there is room on the forms we will also include your child’s Kanienkeha name.

Who has access to my child’s personal information?
At times coaches, program directors and board members have access to certain portions of the information on file. However, the only people who have full access to the Global Database are the secretaries who enter the data. Occasionally the number of players registered per sport or per age division is used for statistical purposes by various community organizations.

For more information on registration call the SRU at (450) 638-3311.
